Australasian Railway Association (ARA)

The Australasian Railway Association (ARA) is the peak body for rail in Australia, representing all sectors of the rail industry. We represent an array of rail organisations, including private and public, passenger and freight operators, track owners and managers, manufacturers of rolling stock, construction companies and all other organisations supplying and contributing to the Australasian rail sector.

The ARA is committed to supporting its members, via a number of initiatives, to improve the gender balance in the Australasian rail workforce, recognising the many benefits it brings.

The unprecedented level of investment in rail now and over the next decades, provides rail with the unique opportunity and perfect leverage to embrace change and improve the gender diversity of its workforce.

  • Women are making an enormous contribution to all areas of rail taking on roles across the industry from train drivers to engineers and management positions.
  • Balancing work and family life is important and the majority of rail organisations offer benefits to ensure that females are able to receive the necessary support and development to advance both their career and family life.
  • The nature of work is changing: automation and technologies have enabled more females to undertake traditionally male work.
  • 99% of rail companies have formal policies or strategies in place that support gender diversity.
