Public Policy Senior Manager, Australia Federal Government
Would you like to be part of a public policy team focused on increasing awareness and adoption of Amazon Web Services (AWS)* and the utility public cloud model amongst enterprises and the public sector and regulated industries in Australia? Do you have public policy and/or government affairs experience, preferably in the technology sector, and a desire to build your career in the field of public affairs?

AWS is the leading provider of hyper-scale public cloud computing services, providing IT infrastructure offerings that deliver on-demand compute capacity, storage, content delivery, and database services. We are looking for a talented, innovative, respected and skilled public affairs policy communicator to represent AWS in Canberra before policymakers and bureaucrats who make decisions that impact our business. The successful candidate will work with our Asia Pacific policy team to identify and build policy position for the company in Australia and proactively develop relationships with policymakers, political officials and politicians, executives in government and other relevant organisations and representatives of industry associations and organisations involved in shaping public policy. The successful candidate will be responsible for gathering intelligence on developing legislative and regulatory policy initiatives and contributing to the development of appropriate responses. They will monitor political trends and engage at senior political and bureaucratic levels with the ability to influence approaches to public policy. The individual will need to be a great communicator capable of articulating the views and positions of AWS as well conversing on a myriad of interconnected policy concepts. They will need to be able to demonstrate the capacity to engage and relate to political figures as well as being an influential AWS representative on those business associations and coalitions that are critical to advancing AWS’s public policy and business objectives.

The successful candidate will be based in Canberra and will be a member of the AWS APAC Public Policy team. They will report to the ANZ Head of Public Policy AWS, based in Sydney. They will:

- Contribute to the development of public policy and political priorities for AWS and lead advocacy with relevant Federal Government officials and senior public servants based in Canberra;
- Assess and communicate potential regulatory threats and public sector business opportunities, develop mitigation or enhancement strategies and policy positions, and coordinate external advocacy efforts, outreach programs and key initiatives in concert with AWS business objectives;
- Collect and verify intelligence gathered in Canberra and across the country relating to legislative and regulatory policy issues of interest to AWS and will develop and deploy strategies and tactics to demonstrate the merit of the positions proposed by AWS.
- Arrange, lead, and participate in meetings and briefings for politicians and senior bureaucrats on the views of AWS and be responsible for shaping the opinions and approaches of public officials;
- Advance AWS’s policy positions directly where appropriate and through industry associations/coalitions to enable an unrestricted, transparent and technology informed regulatory environment at a national level for the growth of AWS; and
- Work collaboratively and transparently with AWS business units, in particular the AWS Public Sector team, to ensure alignment between core business priorities, public policy goals and “go to market” strategies.

The successful candidate must be a respected and experienced professional who is inquisitive, intellectually ambitious and enthusiastic about technology, enjoy working hard and being continually challenged, demonstrate sound judgment in ambiguous situations, and enjoy robust advocacy and policy strategy.

Basic Qualifications
  • 8+ years of working in public or private sector in the area of public policy
  • Bachelor's Degree
    Preferred Qualifications
  • 8+ years’ experience working in the public or private sector on public policy development, preferably in the technology, digital transformation and/or communications area.
  • Demonstrated ability to contribute to and lead in the development of public policy initiatives and/or participating in the review of existing public policies.
  • A track record of successful policy development and adjustment.
  • A thorough understanding of the end to end legislative process, including legislative development, committee processes and parliamentary procedures.
  • Legislative implementation experience.
  • Extensive high level network in the public sector.
  • A thorough understanding of the interaction and interrelations between the bureaucracy and Ministerial offices, political parties and associated entities.
  • Ability to demonstrate sound judgment in ambiguous circumstances.
  • Ability to work independently while being able to contribute successfully to cross-functional teams.
  • Excellent organizational skills, ability to manage multiple projects at once.
  • Exceptional written and oral communication skills
  • Strong analytical and computer skills – technology degree an advantage
  • Common sense, great judgment, and a good sense of humor.
