The Software Engineering Manager (SEM) is a Senior Manager position that reports directly to the General Manager Systems Engineering. This role forms part of a senior leadership group whose collective purpose is to manage a service team – an autonomous team of 100-120 people delivering ongoing IT change on content management, data warehouse and big data platforms to support a unique set of business processes within nbn.
The service team leadership group comprises the SEM, a service owner responsible for what the team is to deliver and a service portfolio manager responsible for when (and how in terms of delivery method) the service team will deliver. The SEM will need to work closely with his or her leadership counterparts to ensure the success of the service team.
The Software Engineering Manager will be accountable for the HR management of the software engineers in the service team, comprising of both permanent and extended worker types. This role also involves the establishment and ongoing evolution of sound software engineering practices, the technical quality of the output and acts as a champion to appropriately prioritise technical change work alongside business change to ensure that the underpinning delivery platforms remain fit for purpose and perform within their operational KPIs.

A bit about your role
Outlined below are the core duties that the Software Engineering Manager will be responsible for delivering:
- Lead the delivery and system (application platform) teams to drive successful IT application change.
- Manage multi-disciplinary engineering teams responsible for designing and implementing new functionality, as well as improving existing delivery practises including the applicable forums such as “Design Authority” and tools to support them.
- Attract, develop and retain a high performing team, offering ongoing feedback, professional growth opportunities, and overall career guidance.
- Implement and continuously improve processes to ensure that software delivery is as efficient as possible and of the highest quality, taking advantage of appropriate Agile and DevOps practises and following any/all nbn-mandated processes/standards.
- Establish a set of software engineering metrics that measure software delivery efficiency and quality to enable goal setting and objective improvement measurement.
- Maintain awareness and point of view on emerging software delivery practises and technologies.
A bit about you
The successful candidate will likely demonstrate a combination of Agile and DevOps engineering practices coupled with strong leadership and drive to deliver software engineering process change to an IT organisation. You will possess a significant background and proven track record in enterprise content management, data warehouse and big data applications/platforms.
As an experienced Software Engineering Manager, you will understand the end to end delivery cycle from idea inception to production ready and its translation to agile and continuous delivery practices for the optimisation of quality and efficiency.
Furthermore, you will be an accomplished people leader; capable of managing and growing a talented team tasked with solving complex problems within a high-growth, highly-technical, service-centric environment.
