Job Description

The successful applicant will be responsible for managing a PureFlex virtual and physical environment for a large enterprise customer. The applicant will also need to provide support, guidance (including work instructions and implementation plans) to the AIX team in addition to performing project work across the environment.

Assist in defining and refining technical direction, and helping lead innovation within the team.

Provide mentoring, knowledge transfer and written documentation so as to improve the overall level of knowledge and ability within the team.

Assist the team leaders when required.

Duties & Responsibilities:

Administer PureFlex v1.3+ in a large enterprise environment

Manage underlying virtualization infrastructure for a large enterprise

Plan & implement new systems and upgrades to the UNIX environment

Actively and pre-emptively determine possible failure faults and causes

Provide Team Leaders/managers with input re projects/direction when required

Manage and resolve problems identified by users or monitoring software

Work with change and problem management tools

Provide technical assistance to the other members of the System Administration team and Share knowledge/experiences

Hardware fault detection and correction - vendor liaising

Liaise with customer accounts as required

Mandatory Skills

PureFlex v1.3+ Systems administration experience

Power Systems Experience

PurePower including Power VM

Strong AIX 4.3.x & 5. x 6.x System administration experience

Strong skill in IBM Virtualization products (HMC, PowerVM, LPM, VIO and LPAR)

Strong problem determination skills

Ability to work unsupervised on several issues concurrently

Able to perform disk management functions such as extending logical volumes, creating file systems, mirroring disks (ie. Not through SMIT)

Understanding and ability to manually rebuild a kernel

Proficient in TCP/IP

strong understanding of P4/P5/P6/P7 pSeries hardware architectures

Very comfortable with problem and change management practices

Knowledge of IBM and non IBM disk subsystems and related device drivers (ESS, DS4xxx, DS8xxx, SVC, XIV, EMC, MPIO, SDDPCM, PowerPath)

Knowledge of IBM System p hardware products

System firmware related skills

HACMP and HACMP/ES skills


Good Documentation Skills/ Technical Documentation

Flexible working hrs eg. Weekend work, after hours

Performance Monitoring and trouble-shooting.

Sound Scripting skills

Able to perform Operating System and Production Upgrades

Ability to supervise others

Liaise with Vendor i.e. IBM ITS

Strong understanding and awareness of AIX system security

Strong communication skills - both verbal and written

Desired Experience

TSM/ADSM operational and troubleshooting knowledge

AIX System Admin Certification

Some DB2/Oracle DBA exposure

GPFS exposure

Veritas (f/s and cluster) experience

Perl Scripting and Knowledge of IBM SSA disk subsystem
