Our Standards and Education team are looking for an experienced Lead Engineer with a focus on quality to lead and develop quality engineering practices at all stages of the delivery lifecycle

What’s the team?

Standards & Education is a team focused on making world-class engineering at Xero easy. By identifying the standards that Xero engineers strive to uphold, and the education that enables them to do so, we seek to continually improve engineering practices in teams all across Xero.

What’s the role?

As a Lead Engineer in Standards & Education, you’ll work in collaboration with other Xeros to help create and deliver beautiful software to our customers, faster. You’ll model the standard for engineering excellence at Xero, supporting Xero teams to grow their technical capability and improve development and quality practices.

You’ll contribute to the technical direction of quality engineering, helping grow our cross-functional environment by identifying technical gaps, promoting capability growth, and championing & demonstrating modern principles and practices.

You'll help build and manage software that solves engineering problems at scale. You will be enabled to seek clarity with technical complexities and be able to demonstrate smart ways to simplify. You’ll be able to make data-driven decisions that will release value early to solve Xero customers' problems more effectively.

What you'll do:

  • Help guide the quality engineering practices for Xero teams, identifying and resolving challenges to ensure processes and tools are optimised for their context and engineers have the required knowledge and skills. Contribute to and champion Xero’s quality strategy and standards.
  • Recognise and solve for common patterns of failure in team’s delivery practices, preventing future issues by improving skills, processes or tooling. Measure the cost or value of issues, and often lead incident responses and post-mortems.
  • Contribute to Xero's engineering standards and frameworks. Work closely with engineering leadership to apply standards to software and delivery processes.
  • Proactively maintain, grow and share knowledge of development technologies used in the development of Xero’s software applications.
  • Champion automation of delivery processes and ensure deployment pipelines are fit for purpose. Coach and support engineers to ensure all software is running as expected and proactively work to prevent customer facing problems.
  • Be a proactive champion of agile and delivery practices who coaches and develops others in this space in order to ensure a consistent approach to ways of working.
  • Participate in interviews and recruitment processes.
  • What you’ll bring with you:

  • A proven ability to communicate and coach a quality mindset, and associated quality engineering skills.
  • Practical expertise in test automation for all aspects of a modern tech stack; inc. web apps, APIs, etc.
  • Proven expertise in working with CI/CD technologies to automate the execution of tests in the path to production.
  • A bias toward making quality visible and observable through monitoring approaches and well defined measurements.
  • Familiarity with test environment infrastructure and configuration, especially utilising cloud technologies.
  • A strategic understanding of elite software engineering delivery, and how quality engineering practices can enable this.
  • The ability to clearly communicate and advocate for practices consistent with the quality engineering strategy and standards.
  • Empathy and understanding to build relationships and support non-quality specialist engineers in the execution of quality engineering activities.
  • A willingness to get your hands dirty when needed, but a preference for pairing or mobbing with other engineers to share your skills.
  • Familiarity with utilising the Accelerate metrics as indicators for improving delivery efficiency and quality.
  • A bias toward measurement and data-driven decision making in driving engineering improvement.
  • Why you should become a Xero
