Downer prides itself on the geographical reach of the solutions it provides but this position takes it to the extreme! What we have is no ordinary job in an extraordinary setting, so we are seeking a person of special character and skills to be our Telecommunication Technician in Antarctica.
The telecommunications system used in Antarctica is part of Spark and Antarctica New Zealand's network and your skills will be used to maintain the communication services at Scott Base and on the Antarctica mainland.
The successful candidate must have a broad skill set and should be experienced in Satellite Earth Station Maintenance, Terrestrial and Radio System Maintenance, Minor Rigging, Nortel PABX Maintenance, Payphones, Structured Cabling Systems Maintenance (adds, moves and changes), Data Networks (adds, moves and changes) and fibre and copper reticulation maintenance, Maintenance of portable communications equipment, paging and other miscellaneous communications equipment. Some technical refresher training is available, if required, prior to departure.
In addition to the relevant Telecommunication experience, you must be able to live and work in a small close-knit team at Scott Base for 13 months (tentatively September 2021 to October 2022). Due to the nature of this extraordinary opportunity, the person appointed will need to undergo an extensive medical examination, and up to two weeks pre-Antarctic training in Christchurch.
