About the Opportunity
We have an opportunity for a senior engineer to join our team in Melbourne. The Platform Engineering team is responsible for the build, deploy, monitoring and maintenance of the underlying cloud infrastructure platform at Afterpay. It is our objective to ensure product development teams can provision new services to the platform with reduced lead times and stack complexity. We want our product teams to be able to focus on building new product features by providing a highly available infrastructure platform. We operate in a fast paced and constantly changing industry. Engineers will work with current technology in a fast paced environment where their work matters and is appreciated.
About the team
The Platform Reliability teams mission is to provide a fast and reliable user experience for Afterpay’s global users. You will work with our global engineering teams to provide capabilities to measure and improve systems reliability and performance. As we continue to scale out the Afterpay platform you will be responsible for providing visibility into the ongoing health of the platform.

Responsibilities - Work within the Platform Reliability Team to:

  • Available for emergency response through escalation or as a response to unhealthy monitoring
  • Debug production issues across services and where possible partner with product engineers.
  • Improve system performance through better resource utilisation, load distribution or latency reduction, cost reduction
  • Driven test automation at a database level to reduce the risk associated with schema changes or releases
  • A SQL expert who can guide engineers on database access patterns for reliability, performance and scalability
  • Provide expert level database consulting. Review critical DDL and DML statements and guide engineers with best practices to support high-availability and high-scale
  • Share decisions and learnings across the engineering organisation through Request for Comment documents, Architectural Decisions Records and architecture diagrams
  • Build monitoring and alerting to notify on symptoms before outages occur
  • Support ongoing performance engineering efforts through both short term fixes and long term strategic improvements
  • About you

  • Comprehensive knowledge of MySQL, MySQL Aurora ideal (our critical DBs run MySQL)
  • A strong understanding of several of the second tier data stores supported at afterpay such as Redis, DynamoDB, PostgreSQL and Cassandra
  • You think about systems - edge cases, failure modes, and lifecycles
  • You're comfortable working in the Unix shell and can debug complex problems across the entire stack
  • Can create Infrastructure as code using Terraform or equivalent tooling
  • Experience with version control, preferably Git
  • Experienced with public cloud platforms (AWS)
  • You can write high quality and testable code in programming language (we mostly use Kotlin, Java, Python and Javascript)
  • Can communicate asynchronously and with empathy
