Transport for NSW is the lead agency of the NSW Transport cluster. Our role is to lead the development of a safe, efficient, integrated transport system that keeps people and goods moving, connects communities and shapes the future of our cities, centres and regions.

We are responsible for strategy, planning, policy, regulation, funding allocation and other non-service delivery functions for all modes of transport in NSW including road, rail, ferry, light rail, point to point, regional air, cycling and walking.
We focus on improving the customer experience and contract public and private operators to deliver customer-focused transport services on our behalf.

We also lead the procurement of transport infrastructure and oversee delivery through project delivery offices and industry delivery partners.

As part of Transport for NSW, our Maritime team is responsible for managing over 2,137km of coastline and 32,242km2 of navigable waterways, educating recreational and commercial patrons on responsible waterways usage. We look after aquatic licencing, vessel registration, moorings management, safety compliance, property administration and special events out on the water, just to name a few. We’re passionate about working with the community to make sure that our waterways are safe, accessible and sustainable for generations to come.

The opportunity

We currently have an exciting opportunity for a Geographic Information System (GIS) Specialist to join the team! Based out of Rozelle, you will be responsible for providing specialised Maritime advice, recommendations, reports, data, analyses, maps and plans utilising the GIS and other resources to support effective decision making and to ensure the corporate and external needs for spatial information are met. In addition to the aforementioned, some of your responsibilities will include;

  • Plan, develop, capture, and maintain GIS related data ensuring integrity and the provision of accurate information to meet internal and external customer needs.
  • Conduct and support GNSS surveys to locate navigation aid assets and other maritime infrastructure to ensure effective management of those assets.
  • Consult with staff in analysis of requirements for using the GIS and provide recommendations and solutions as to implementation or changes to methods and procedures which maximise the effective utilisation of the GIS.

About you

You are degree or diploma qualified in Spatial Information or hold equivalent qualifications and have extensive experience in manipulating and analysing complex spatial data. You have proven experience producing survey plans, hydrographic charts and other cartographic products using Esri ArcGIS and have experience in GNSS survey techniques. Experience in the interpretation of survey, design, engineering and hydrographic plans and navigation charts would be ideal.

Knowledge of navigation rules, regulations and signage, Transport (Maritime) property leasing arrangements, legislation relating to government property, the requirements of NSW property titling system including boundary and title interpretation, historical records, cataloguing and charting systems is highly advantageous.

A successful applicant will have to be detail orientated with strong communication skills & have proven experience working independently and collaborating in a team to deliver key business needs.

The salary for this position is MA13 - $120,428 per annum plus superannuation.
