The Opportunity
  • Use your TEM expertise to prepare and process a wide range of samples
  • Assist in the oversight and maintenance of the TEM facility
  • Join CSIRO Manufacturing and make a difference!

As the Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) Specialist, you will join a team based in the Microscopy Facility in the Manufacturing Business Unit. This Facility is focused on characterisation of samples for research projects within CSIRO and externally. Samples vary significantly in atomic mass, from hard to soft materials as well as biological specimens. CSIRO has access to externally based FIB SEMs required for lamellae production of specialised samples for TEM analysis.

You will support the operation of the TEM including oversight and maintenance. As the successful candidate, you will prepare and process samples for analysis using TEM (including cryo TEM), interpret images and analytical results for various applications such as slow drug release to material identification/properties. Through your collaborations with external facilities, you will significantly increase CSIRO’s TEM advantage through developing and expanding capabilities.

To be successful, you will possess a high level of technical skill and an understanding of the underlying physics principles to allow continuous development (capability, equipment and preparatory) for the optimum operation of the TEM.

Your duties will include:
  • Planning, operating and maintaining the TEM and associated infrastructure.
  • Vetting samples and problem solving in the preparation and presentation of complex or bespoke samples for subsequent high-resolution imaging and compositional analysis.
  • Developing expertise in the instruments and techniques by remaining abreast of advances in the field to strengthen the facility's proficiency and advising leadership on emerging instrumentation needs. Exploring new capabilities to increase applications and material types analysed.
  • Facility administration including account reporting and utilisation, organising equipment repair/maintenance and liaising with manufacturers.
  • Developing and adhering to standard operating procedures and training programs along with supporting technical, operational, training and OHS documentation.

  • A relevant tertiary qualification or equivalent relevant work experience in physics, materials science or biology.
  • Highly proficient in the operation of TEM and associated preparatory techniques, including FIB SEM, with in-depth experience concerning the interrogation of samples to define structural and chemical/physical properties.
  • Demonstrated knowledge concerning the software required to operate and assess output from imaging and analytical techniques.
  • Effective stakeholder management and a history of delivering high-quality analytical outcomes in an autonomous and timely manner.
  • A history of preparing research outcomes for reports, publications and/or presentations which has resulted in the continuation of research.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop standard operating procedures and training programs along with supporting technical, operational, training and OHS documentation.
