We are looking for an experienced People Lead to join our Data Reliability team, based in Wellington.

What’s the role?

As a People Lead, you will be responsible for supporting our engineers with their personal growth and evolving cross-functional capability within Data Reliability Engineering. You will lead recruitment, promote team achievements, and foster the growth of a world-class engineering culture.

We are keen to hear from leaders that have had experience in leading technical teams and have crossed the concept of distributed data stores.

You will have a passion to help people grow & empower them to do the best work of their lives and will work alongside a global team of Reliability People Leads and Principal Engineers to foster the growth of a world class engineering culture. In this role you will also work closely with Reliability Product Owners and Managers to drive shared objectives and create a culture of continually improving our stability and scalability.

What you'll do:

  • Encourage and support the professional development of the engineers under your care
  • Engage with engineers and the processes in the pods you lead to build close relationships and ways of working together.
  • Support the Head of Engineering in executing and improving cross-cutting talent management initiatives and processes such as recruitment, growth and performance management.
  • Lead growth and performance management in your area of responsibility
  • Role-model exemplary leadership, supporting and growing leadership capability for our Xeros.
  • Champion principles and practices that make it possible for engineers to get great work done, while promoting a safe environment for people to experiment and learn.
  • Assist with the development of a world-class engineering culture where engineers have the skills and autonomy needed to build high-quality products and services.
  • Help to cultivate a fun, appreciative, rewarding, innovative and results-driven culture that lives and breathes our Xero values
  • Measure the health of your team, ensuring that all members of your team are empowered to raise ideas and concerns, and that everyone contributes to improvements in how the team works together.
  • Run initiatives designed to improve the overall health and wellbeing of the team you manage.
  • What you'll bring:

  • Experience managing teams using modern leadership techniques
  • Coaching and mentoring experience
  • A growth mindset - you understand that competency is not fixed but is enhanced through dedication and hard work
  • Experience with Agile processes and techniques, and all aspects of modern software development.
  • Basic understanding of distributed data stores
  • A drive to increase the Engineering Capability of yourself and your people
  • Proven ability to navigate areas of conflict in an open, positive and proactive way
  • High EQ - you are self aware, self regulated, motivated and empathetic, with great interpersonal skills
  • Great facilitation skills. Can lead workshops unaided.
  • You’re fine with uncertainty and change – and bring clarity amongst it.
  • #ownership and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent written, interpersonal, communication and presentation skills.
