What we are looking for:

The Payroll Team Lead is a newly created role, and is part of the Wellington based Finance Team, which undertakes the finance function for all of Xero’s worldwide operations. The pay team, within the wider Finance Team, is a global shared service.

You’ll lead a team of payroll specialists and will have experience in managing direct reports. You will ensure accurate, timely and cost effective payment and administration of all payroll requirements. The role requires management, mentoring and coaching of a team of payroll specialists to support the team to do the best work of their lives. You will be part of the wider pay team responsible for the efficient and accurate processing of end-to-end payroll for APAC and EMEA .

What you’ll do:
  • In conjunction with the payroll manager, you’ll be responsible for supporting the pay team’s effective and efficient processing of Xero’s payrolls and all associated processes including:
  • Managing and reviewing payroll processing
  • Managing, organising and prioritising the payroll calendar of work, including planning payroll requirements each month
  • Identifying and resolving day to day payroll issues, escalating any significant risks and issues in a timely manner
  • Assisting with the monthly balancing and reconciliation of the payroll control accounts, including accurate and timely payment of all payroll liabilities, in line with relevant legislation
  • Driving high performance, a beautiful Xero culture and an inspiring work environment aligned with the Xero values
  • Ensuring all direct reports are clear on what their role is and how they contribute to the ongoing success of Xero
  • Developing and encouraging best practice

What you’ll bring:

The successful candidate will have strong in-depth knowledge across all payroll functions, including New Zealand legislative requirements relating to the Holidays Act Legislation. In addition, the role involves research of payroll legislation across the APAC and EMEA regions.
  • Strong knowledge and 6+ years’ experience in managing payroll for a company of 500 plus employees
  • Experienced people manager leading a payroll team with at least 2 direct reports
  • Experience with NetSuite or similar cloud based payroll system highly desirable
  • Experience with Australian, UK, South Africa, Singapore or Hong Kong payroll an advantage
  • Understanding of General Ledger systems including payroll journals
  • In-depth knowledge of workplace, payroll and tax legislation
  • Ability to research and document any relevant legislation and tax guidance
