About the Opportunity
The Unix Systems Administrator is a part of the Support Services team for the Air Component – Command and Control Capability System.The Unix Systems Administrator will be responsible for the day to day administration of Unix Servers and associated infrastructure which includes both Mission and Support Systems.
This position will require knowledge and experience of ICT systems, particularly with Solaris and RedHat UNIX, preferably in the Defence ITIL environment.

In terms of specific responsibilities, you will:

  • Manage server administration tasks such as managing accounts, investigating logs for warnings and errors, ensure servers are secure, and monitoring the Defence Service Management System (DSMS) for new incidents.
  • Monitor hardware issues and engage with OEM or support agency to resolve issue if required.
  • Interact with Level 1 support, Defence customers and other ICT Support teams within Defence to resolve issues.
  • Liaise with stakeholders to implement new solutions/upgrades.
  • Monitor and resolve issues relating to applications located on both the server and the client systems environments across a large geographically distributed network.
  • Provide/Consult on application architecture solutions for business & customer requirements.
  • Investigate and build system prototypes to ensure compatibility and functionality before going live.
  • Implement and deploy development, test, production and exercise ICT systems and software.
  • Implement patching of system when required.
  • Assist with the planning and design, in both the team and as an individual, to ensure the Computing platform infrastructure is fully documented and supportable.
  • Support risk and mitigation planning for planned and unplanned outages.
  • Implement security controls to ensure system is compliant with ISM and DSPF guidelines.
  • Provide rostered on call support during exercises and to mission critical Defence activities.

About you
As an ideal applicant for this opportunity, you'll have:

  • Previous experience in the administration of Unix Server operating systems (Sun Solaris) and the provision of relevant technical support.
  • Demonstrated skills and experience in the systems administration and support of a heterogeneous (Windows / UNIX) environment with a user base in excess of 100 users.
  • Extensive knowledge of UNIX systems, particularly Solaris and Linux.
  • Understanding of Solaris containers and virtualization.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Windows server systems.
  • Demonstrated ability in the deployment, testing, and support of a complex client/server application environment.
  • Understanding of basic networking concepts, particularly interfacing between UNIX and Windows environments.
  • Familiarity with basic functions of VMware ESXi, vSphere.
  • Knowledge and experience of ICT systems, preferably within the Defence ITIL environment.
  • Strong interpersonal and customer service skills and the ability to work collaboratively in a team based work environment.
  • Minimum NV1 security clearance required.

A defence security clearance is required for this position, applicants must be Australian citizens and be eligible to hold the required level of defence security clearance for this position.
