About the role

As the Specialist Tenure & Approvals, this role will give you exposure to supporting a broad portfolio of resource assets associated with our BHP Coal operations. This position will be based in our Brisbane office.

You will support the day-to-day planning and coordination of land access and approval requirements, securing and maintaining exploration and mining tenements, working with internal and external stakeholders to secure land access, management of approvals and meeting legal requirements for access.

You will also be exposed to land access, tenure, mining and planning legislation issues, support land negotiations and other stakeholder engagement exercises including with land owners, communities, Local, State and Federal Governments on behalf of BHP’s coal assets.


In this role you will:
  • Ensure robust approvals strategy and associated framework to support delivery of projects and sustainability of long term operations;
  • Responsible for planning, securing and maintaining land access approvals to support operations and enable growth within the BHP’s Quensland Coal operations;
  • Engage, oversee and support tenement, land access and legislation capability across QLD to ensure tenement portfolio is accurately maintained and tenements secured;
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to gather specifications and analysis relating to tenure management;
  • Assist in implementing the commercial arrangements associated with land access and approvals within our Queensland operations and acquisitions;
  • Engage with studies and resourcing engineering teams, planning and execution groups to guide through study and infrastructure project obligations on access activities;
  • Interface with support functions including HSE, Legal and Corporate Affairs teams to support access for exploration activities, and operations to support ongoing access for mining and associated activities.


About You

You will have previously worked in a similar role and will be able to demonstrate experience in securing mining and development approvals in Queensland (including a thorough understanding of mining, development and environment legislation and associated processes). Previous experience coordinating access & approval across environmental, tenement, land, heritage and water approvals is required.

You will have the opportunity to utilise your knowledge of State / Commonwealth legislation such as Commonwealth EPBC Act, Qld Environmental Protection Act 1994, Qld Mineral Resources Act 1989, Qld Sustainable Planning Act 2009, Water Act 2000 and State Development and Public Works Organisation Act 1971.

This role will see you managing and supporting the execution of multi-functional external approvals projects and programs within the business, as well as providing advice and engage effectively at all levels within BHP Coal.

You are able to work independently and can manage multiple tasks in a dynamic work environment. By nature, you are at ease engaging and influencing people at all levels of the organisation to achieve results and can positively contribute to team culture. A relevant tertiary qualification is preferred.
