About the opportunity

This role is responsible for the provision of financial counselling to clients who are impacted by problem gambling. The counselling service aims to result in a client’s financial problem/s being partially or fully resolved; a client being able to make informed decisions on the best course of action to resolve their financial difficulties; and/or a client’s improved ability to manage their financial affairs in the future. The role will also establish a community education program about problem gambling and financial issues.

This role is offered on a part-time basis working 2 days per week and is temporary until end of December 2020 with a possibility of extension.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Provide face-to-face and telephone financial counselling to individual clients and families in accordance with Uniting policies and procedures
  • Provide individual and group advocacy and negotiation, including speaking and negotiating with banks and other lenders on your client’s behalf
  • Provide assessment and screening processes for families, couples and individuals.
  • Maintain accurate and professional client records in accordance with the Federal Privacy Act, Family Law Act and Unifam policy and procedures including all written material, audio-visual records, telephone messages and conversations.
  • Develop and implement a community education and development program
  • Meet all Compliance obligations
  • Actively contributes to a safe and supportive working environment that is inclusive of all staff through celebrating their nationality, cultural background, LGBTI status, abilities, gender and age

About You

  • Accredited member status with the Financial Counsellor’s Association of NSW or equivalent.
  • Minimum three years’ experience in the provision of general financial counselling in a community service focused environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to deliver presentations on financial and problem gambling issues to individuals, couples and groups
  • Demonstrated knowledge of financial counselling funding guidelines
  • Demonstrated ability to work with different cultures and backgrounds.
  • Demonstrated money management and negotiation skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with people suffering difficulties and crisis.
  • Demonstrated high level interpersonal, active listening and analytical skills.
  • Ability to meet deadlines and work under conflicting time pressures.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently as well as be able to contribute to the functioning of a team.
  • Excellent communication, organisation and report writing skills.
  • Computer literacy
  • A valid and current driver’s license
