The Role:

The primary purpose of the Wharf Shift Manager role is to lead and manage operational teams allocated to shifts in order to achieve productivity, safety and customer performance standards. The work involves loading and unloading of a variety of products such as bulk minerals using a range of methods to and from vessels, storage areas and vehicles in the port area.

The successful applicant will be provided with the tools of trade as part of the employment package, which includes a well maintained vehicle and work phone.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Leadership and Supervision of direct reports within Whyalla Stevedoring team.
  • Monitor vessel loading and discharging to ensure that they meet Qube and
  • Client requirements.
  • Manage machinery cycles so that these are completed as efficiently as possible.
  • Assist and backup the Site Operations Manager and other Shift Managers as required.
  • Liaise and work with other site staff, including Maintenance personnel to
    make sure that site objectives are met.
  • Induct and train existing and new employees for compliance and skill levels.
  • Assist with projects as required by the Superintendents and the Manager.
  • Supervise staff, ensuring staff have skills required to undertake
  • tasks as designated.
  • Complete regular on the job observations and coaching, and advice to employees to assist in their safety development.
  • Monitor and develop team performance and if necessary carry out counselling and discipline in line with Qube processes.
  • Ensure Qube/ Qube Procedures and Policies, are understood and adhered to.
  • Use initiative to develop and recommend operational changes.
  • Foster a culture of teamwork and the pursuit of excellence in all employees.
  • Oversee the implementation of actions to prevent the occurrence of deficiencies in the delivery of service.
  • Ensure Pre- Start Meetings are held and documented.
  • Ensure Machinery Pre- Starts are carried out and documented.
  • Manage tasks to ensure completions within the allocated shifts are complying with fatigue management requirements.
  • Complete other tasks as directed in a timely manner

Qualifications and Experience

  • Supervisory experience in the stevedore or similar industry.
  • Experience in high risk operating environments.
  • Understanding of operational capabilities of machinery and lifting gear.
  • Experience in regulated workplace environments.
  • Knowledge of machines (Forklift, Loader, Skid Steer & Excavator) and desirable to hold tickets for these machines but not essential
  • High level of Computer skills essential – Excel, word, outlook
  • Ability to use logistics and inventory management software and systems
